The Reverse Acronym Game: KDE*
So folks, it has come to my attention through various conversations with people involved with open source, but not KDE, that we have an image problem. The problem is that KDE has outgrown its name. It used to be Kool, but now it's just K. It used to be Desktop, but it's outgrowing that metaphor. So all we have left is the Environment.

So rather than calling ourselves the KD Environment, we need to sit and think about this for a while.

The other problem we have is that the KDE community is growing and branching to include a lot more than just a "Desktop/Development Environment" as was the original acronym's definition. We now include applications for other platforms, and a whole lot more.

So do we just call our organization "KDE" and refuse to define the acronym anymore? Well, companies have successfully converted to using just an acronym in the past: see IBM, for a good example. They've been using just their acronym for ages now to refer to the entirety of their operations, even in cases where it isn't at all related to business machines.

So what we should be doing is calling KDE the organization, and not the product. KDE is not a Desktop Environment, it's a community that produces an Application Suite, a Developer Platform, a Unix Workspace Environment, a set of open standards (via freedesktop.org for example), a series of related applications called ExtraGear, and more.

So perhaps we shall drop the Desktop Environment portion of the acronym altogether and be known simply as KDE. But, if you're like me, you want to have more fun with this idea.

Let's begin the first round of the Reverse Acronym Bazaar! Open comments for new definitions that suit the letters KDE. Who knows, maybe one will stick.

<troy> we should come up with a new reverse acronym for KDE... like the K Development Entourage or something silly like that which refers to the community rather than the product :)
<aseigo> troy: KDE Destroys Everything .. no. too negative. ;)

*note: this exercise is just for fun at this point. KDE is not (yet) officially changing it's definition or anything.

I think it should change name to something cooler and easier to say (not an acronym!)

Haiku and Syllable are examples of good OS-type names.

'KDE Does Everything' has my vote --it was what I was going to post. It's a good acronym, and keeps the KDE which has considerable name recognition that I think it would be best to keep. Besides which I don't want to lose all the nice backgrounds, screen savers and general themes that contain 'KDE'. And what about Kongi? Has anyone asked his opine? Just because he's green doesn't mean he hasn't got feelings...

Hey, what about the recursive acronym "KDE Desktop Environment"?!

I think that getting away from the Letter replace game in KDE apps with KDE 4.x will go a long way to quell the nitpicking a$$HATS out there who cannot really find a good reason to dislike KDE ( personally, I never had a problem with it, I always thought that the validity and usefulness of an app is not based on how its name is spelled)........ok!

And as for KDE.....I cannot think of anything better that just being KDE and acronym that has plenty of brand value without needing anything else.

I think KDE is not that bad. For new users (who probably don't have a concept of a "Desktop Environment", we should find an easy name. They should just be able to say "I'm running shnizzle", something that's easy to remember.

I've no problems with getting rid of the Desktop Environment bit, but not just for the sake of getting rid of it.

The most important answers to the "What is KDE?" question are: Community, Software, Development Framework. Obviously, the software part is what matters to users and which includes the desktop itself.

How about "I'm running the K", or "I'm running K"?

It's all bits and bytes, you can do in KDE what you can do in real life, but digital.

Digital is the new black ..eh.. the new virtual.

The KDE project forms the base of the KDE Digital Environment.
You can Experience it as it is.
Build new applications on top of it.
Join and expand it.

I like this...or you could just call it "K" - the "K" Digital Experience.
"K" can just be the brand.
Whatever the name, KDE is great! :-)

One thought I had would be to rename kwin plasma-wm and just call the desktop environment "Plasma" (if you're talking about the DE in a narrow sense), and use "KDE" as a brand for everything that uses the kdelibs.

Oh and more on-topic, KDE would then be a "Komplete Desktop Experience" =)

I've always been a fan of merging with Gnome, and calling it the Open Desktop Experience, or Ode. (Along the lines of Out of Body Experience or Gaping Lotus Experience.)

For KDE, I'm not sure, even with the help of /usr/share/dict/words. Kindly? Kingly? Knightly? Koala?

(Reply to this)

So do we just call our organization "KDE" and refuse to define the acronym anymore?

Krucial Dynamic Elegance

That's pretty much how I see KDE. It's a crucial work tool, it's very dynamic and adaptable and it still has an elegant appearance in spite of its usefulness.

I've never really been keen on the acronym itself, let alone it's definition. I don't think there will be many who agree with me, the practicalities of changing KDE to something else must be huge.

I do think Gnome sounds a lot kooler (sic) than the kool desktop environment.

Unfortunately I've never been good at naming things without spending a hell of a long time thinking about it, so I can't offer something better.

Hi! I have a lot of spare time at work and need something to fill the time between 9am and 5pm, so I turned to free online games. I've found a couple of games I like and thought I'd pass them on. If you know of any, feel free to add to the list.
For example this http://iceonlinegames.com It has a bunch of card, puzzle, breakout and adventure games. If anyone knows of some other gaming websites, feel free to share them.
