Congrats to Wine on 1.0
Well, I'd just like to raise my voice in the chorus of congratulations that are echoing throughout the web (and often hiding in the Firefox 3.0 stuff). Congratulations to the Wine project on Wine 1.0, from your friends at KDE :) I see your roadmap for post-1.1, and your list of supported apps and I wonder, is your 1.0 release the tipping point? Can people use a fully FOSS stack for everything these days?

Cheers, and thanks for your hard work.

"Can people use a fully FOSS stack for everything these days?"

Wouldn't wine's 1.0 release be rather a non-issue if that was the case?

Normally, yes. People can use fully FOSS applications for practically everything. However, there are some very specialized applications and some proprietary formats that FOSS can't use. A very common example being Adobe Photoshop. Linux cannot import Photoshop documents, but can run Photoshop in Wine. Better, it would be easier to reverse-engineer Photoshop documents if you can run Photoshop alongside you hex editor and GDB.

But that's exactly my point. Wine wouldn't be considered important if everyone could rely on FOSS only, regardless if it has reached a 1.0 release or not.

Don't get me wrong: I like wine and it's an astonishing achievement but it sounds kinda odd to ask the question "Can people use a fully FOSS stack for everything these days?" in a post about wine since wine almost by definition is trying to make it possible to use non-foss apps.

Oh, and Linux can import Photoshop documents (I assume you mean .psd files?). Or rather: Gimp and Kolourpaint can (and I thought Krita could but my version of it refuses to). Admittedly, I don't know if all versions of the format are supported or how well but the files I've tried with worked.
